We are extremely proud of the work we have accomplished in the garden. However, we could not have achieved all of our goals without the amazing support we have received and continue to receive from the community and stores around Hollywood.
Our garden is located just a block from Home Depot, and they have been supporting us from the very beginning. Most recently, Home Depot generously donated a brand-new pergola, which has become a beautiful focal point for our community gatherings. They also provided new tools to help maintain our garden and donated outdoor furniture to create a welcoming space for members and visitors. Additionally, they contributed wood to help us build new raised beds, expanding our garden’s capacity. To top it off, Home Depot donated a projector, which has helped keep our movie nights alive and vibrant. Their ongoing support has been instrumental in fostering community and connection in our garden.
Since 2022, the garden has been partnering with the Starbucks on Western & Fountain to collect used coffee grounds. These grounds are a fantastic source of nitrogen, which plays a key role in enriching our compost and improving soil health. In addition to incorporating the grounds into our compost, we apply a generous amount directly to the soil around our fruit trees to give them an extra nutrient boost. This practice has helped enhance the vitality of our trees and promote healthier fruit production, all while reducing waste and supporting sustainability in our community.
The LA Conservation Corps generously donated the initial fruit trees for our orchard, helping lay the foundation for a thriving community space. They continue to play a vital role in maintaining our compost system by regularly adding new materials and turning the piles to ensure proper aeration and decomposition. A healthy, productive garden starts with well-managed compost, and thanks to their ongoing support, we’re able to enrich our soil and foster sustainable growth throughout the garden. Their contributions have been essential to building a flourishing environment for all our members.
Urban Farming has been an invaluable supporter of our garden, fostering a strong sense of community and helping us thrive. Their efforts have been instrumental in securing key sponsorships with partners like Home Depot and Bonnie Plants, both of which have provided essential resources to support our growth. From facilitating plant donations to helping build infrastructure, Urban Farming’s dedication has played a crucial role in the garden’s continued success. Their ongoing support is a cornerstone of our ability to create a flourishing, sustainable space for all.
Through the LA Children’s Hospital’s Community Wellness Program, we are thrilled to be receiving a grant to build a greenhouse that will help us grow and provide healthy, fresh food to our community. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote nutrition and healthy eating habits, similar to CHLA’s work at their on-site garden. Just as they are cultivating produce to improve patient meals and educate families about healthy eating, we aim to create a space at Fountain Community Gardens where our community members can access fresh produce and learn about sustainable gardening practices. This greenhouse will also support hands-on workshops and plant giveaways, helping to foster healthier futures for everyone in our neighborhood.
Bonnie Plants has been a tremendous supporter of Fountain Community Gardens through their annual donation of plant transplants. At our past Earth Day celebration, we were thrilled to have over 2,000 transplants to give away to community members, thanks to Bonnie’s generosity. This giveaway was a huge success, bringing people together to celebrate gardening, sustainability, and community connections. The plants not only helped neighbors start or enhance their own gardens but also reinforced our mission to promote healthy produce for everyone. We look forward to continuing this partnership to make future events just as impactful!
We are proud to say that every year the garden works with the UCLA Volunteer Center to be one of their sites for their big volunteer day. It is one of the university’s largest community service events.
